Parkland shooting: Florida governor suspends sheriff over high school attack

Florida's new Governor Ron DeSantis announced Friday he has signed an executive order to suspend Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel for his department's response to the Parkland school shooting previous year. "I served the county honorably", he said.

The Republican governor flew to Fort Lauderdale three days after taking office to remove the Democratic sheriff, appointing a former police sergeant to serve as acting sheriff.

While campaigning a year ago, DeSantis said on multiple occasions that Israel should be suspended for how he and his office handled the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Five members of the BSO command staff also resigned Friday, two of them citing the unjust decision by DeSantis.

He said he was suspended only because his outspoken gun control stance angered the National Rifle Association. Israel has said none of those contacts warranted an arrest.
