Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen to testify before Congress in February

Michael Cohen, a former personal lawyer for President Donald Trump, is scheduled to testify before the House oversight committee next month regarding his work for the president.

Mueller's scrutiny of Cohen has focused on the attorney's role in Trump's business dealings, particularly negotiations over a Trump Tower project in Moscow during the 2016 campaign.

The Oversight hearing may not be Cohen's only appearance.

"I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired", Cohen told ABC News.

They now hold the chairmanship of committees with the power to hold hearings, inviting or forcing witnesses to testify in public.

In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to breaking campaign-finance laws by helping orchestrate payments to silence former Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, who said they had sexual encounters with Trump while he was married.

Cohen's cooperation with Mueller prompted a falling out with his former client, with Trump attacking Cohen on Twitter, including accusing him of lying to try to lessen his jail sentence.

The announcement of Cohen's testimony is the latest sign that House Democrats plan to make oversight of every aspect of Trump's life a key part of their control of the House.

After more than a decade as Trump's personal lawyer, Cohen has plenty of dirt on the president.

In a press release, Cummings said, "I thank Michael Cohen for agreeing to testify before the Oversight Committee voluntarily".

The president has denied the affairs but has deployed shifting explanations about when he learned about the payments to the women. He said he's speaking with Mueller's office to prevent that.

In a December interview, Cummings, D-Md., said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he wanted Cohen to appear before Congress as soon as this month and signaled that he viewed it as a matter of extreme effect.

The panel's top Republican, Rep. Jim Jordan of OH, said Cohen's appearance shows that Cummings is using the "committee as a venue for political theatre rather than legitimate oversight", noting how Cohen has admitted knowingly lying to Congress and is a witness in ongoing investigations.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison December 12 by U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III.

"The request still stands, regardless of any public testimony Mr. Cohen may give on other issues", its chairman, Sen.

The public release of a redacted transcript of his previous closed-door testimony to the House Intelligence Committee in its own Russian Federation investigation is expected to be released soon, along with the testimony of dozens of other witnesses in that probe. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement.

Cohen's 2017 congressional testimony before the Senate intelligence and House intelligence committees led to a guilty plea in November 2018 for lying under oath about Trump's business dealings in Russian Federation.
