Americans may find themselves missing an agency they usually love to hate if the government shutdown persists: the Internal Revenue Service. Conveniently enough, the IRS is equipped to accept returns-they just can't issue refunds, according to the Detroit Free Press.

But those hoping that an IRS shutdown means a breather on their taxes will be disappointed.

If consumers haven't received tax forms by mid-February, they are advised to contact your employer and request a copy or ask that it be resent, according to the IRS.

Tovey also says that it's important to take the same steps as usual in filing taxes, so that once the shutdown is lifted folks can have their money as soon as possible.

That's making tax professionals fret as they anticipate a shorter window in which to file. As we head into tax season (the IRS hasn't publicized a start date yet), those plans will be updated, a source tells CNN.

Since the shutdown began on December 22, IRS has been operating on a shutdown plan that it uses outside of the tax-filing season, which doesn't fund the processing of tax refunds.

Soon it will be time to file your tax returns. As of Friday, it's unclear when filing season begins.

The Wall Street Journal reported that by February 2, 2018, the IRS had paid $12.6 billion in refunds to more than 6 million households and by February 16, that figure increased to $101.2 billion for almost 32 million households.
