Major Winter Storm Threatens End-of-2018 Travel

Meteorologists say the storm will deliver a mix of rain, freezing rain and snow which was expected to cause deteriorating travel conditions and power outages. In Wadena County, the snow accumulation may range from 5-12 inches with wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour.

Gusts near 60 miles per hour have occurred in western Kansas and central Nebraska during Thursday morning.

A long stretch of uneventful weather in south-central Minnesota is expected to end Wednesday afternoon, but forecasters expect the worst of a looming winter storm to hit northwest of the Mankato area.

A storm system playing havoc with holiday travelers returning home from vacation is moving into the Southeast on Thursday with severe storms and snow to the north.

Cold wind chill values are also expected with the passage of the cold front on Friday or Friday night. With the month almost over, just three days had temperatures below normal and even then the overnight low did not drop below zero.

The powerful storm is making travel hard Thursday with motorists on the move during this holiday week.
