In a statement issued Saturday, BC Hydro said it had called in crews from around B.C. and had more than 800 personnel in the field trying to clear downed trees and fix power lines felled in what it called "one of the most severe windstorms it has experienced in 20 years".

Two days after a powerful Pacific storm slammed into the south coast, wreaking havoc from Vancouver Island to the Fraser Valley, tens of thousands of people remain without power.

One man had to be rescued by a helicopter from a damaged White Rock pier, while another man in Surrey was injured and a person in Duncan was killed by a falling tree.

The force of the waves also tossed logs and concrete picnic tables onto the popular promenade along the city's waterfront and Walker said that area will be cordoned off while repairs are made.

Despite BC Hydro crews working around the clock to get things back up and running, over 80,000 customers on the island are still experiencing outages because of the storm.

BC Hydro said about 155,000 customers were still without power by midday Friday and some could be in the dark for days as crews work to fix outages on Vancouver Island, Metro Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Valley.

The system is bringing very strong wind gusts, that are expected to cause widespread damage.

"Yesterday's windstorm was one of the most severe storms BC Hydro has experienced in years", a post on the utility's website said.

In Nanaimo, officials are urging residents to conserve water as the city continues to fix its water treatment plant, which was also damaged in the storm on Thursday.

City pools and arenas are closed until further notice.

The BC Coroner Service said the woman was in her late 20s but it's too early in its investigation to release further details.

BC Ferries has cancelled all sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay until 3 p.m., and several other routes were hit with cancellations as a major storm moves toward the coast, CTV News reports.
