Vaping use is also seen among younger teens, with the MTF survey likewise finding that more than one of every 10 8th graders reported vaping nicotine liquid in the past 12 months.

The government's top doctor is taking aim at the best-selling electronic cigarette brand in the US, urging swift action to prevent Juul and similar vaping brands from addicting millions of teenagers. The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.

According to a new survey, the number of high school students that use nicotine-tinged electronic cigarettes nearly doubled in 2018 in comparison with 2017.

The increases, based on a representative sampling of 13,850 high school students nationwide, translate to about 1.3 million more adolescents vaping in 2018, the researchers said.

"That's a marked increase just over a one-year period", said Dr. Wilson Compton, deputy director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, which funds the survey.

Despite speculation that the powerful crown prince ordered the hit, the kingdom has strongly denied he was involved. Saudi Arabia admitted the Riyadh critic was killed at its consulate in Istanbul.

Experts attribute the jump to newer versions of e-cigarettes, like those by Juul Labs Inc. that resemble computer flash drives and can be used discreetly.

Researchers at the University of MI in Ann Arbor, who conducted the annual survey, asked 44,482 students from 392 private and public schools across the country about their use of tobacco, opioids, marijuana and alcohol. That voluntary action came days before the Food and Drug Administration proposed industrywide restrictions on online and convenience store sales of e-cigarettes to deter use by kids. But Compton said students may not really be checking.

A total of 37.3 percent of 12th graders reported "any vaping" in the past 12 months, compared to 27.8 percent in 2017, the survey said. Teenage opioid use is also decreasing: 3.4 percent of seniors reported using prescription opioids in 2018, down from 4.2 percent in 2017 - and significantly lower than its peak of 9.5 percent in 2004.

The use of any kind of nicotine-containing product - including traditional cigarettes, cigars and smokeless tobacco - by 12th-graders grew from 23.7 percent in 2017 to 28.9 percent in 2018.

There was a bit of good news in the report, with teens reporting decreased use of alcohol, tobacco and opioids.

Major League Baseball hot stove: Mets sign catcher Wilson Ramos to 2-year deal
According to Daniel Álvarez Montes of ElExtraBase, the Mets agreed to a deal with one of the best catchers in the market. According to reports , Ramos' contract could be worth as much as $26 million if the Mets exercise a third-year option.

"Intriguingly, when they go off to college or go to work, you see the highest rates of opioid use among 18 to 24 years of age". Other studies have shown people claim to be using nicotine-free products when in fact they are not.

Juul said in a statement that it shares the surgeon general's goal: "We are committed to preventing youth access of Juul products".

"You're seeing right now that 30% of 12th-graders a year ago were exposed to nicotine", Volkow said.

The survey showed that factors that make vaping so attractive to youth include its novelty and the easy concealability of the latest vaping devices, which better allows youth to vape without adults knowing about it. "Right now the number is more like 1.7 percent".

Fewer teens report binge drinking (five or more drinks in a row). "This increase was driven exclusively by nicotine vaping", the researchers wrote.

"Even parents have a tolerance to alcohol, and in many instances, they maybe even provide the alcohol for parties that they are holding in their house, with the sense that, what harm is there to let teenagers drink when they are home?"
