Microsoft's Windows Sandbox Runs Programs in an Isolated Desktop

'At Microsoft we regularly encounter these situations, so we developed Windows Sandbox: an isolated, temporary, desktop environment where you can run untrusted software without the fear of lasting impact to your PC.

Let's face it, the Internet is a scary place and we know that malicious actors commonly release programs or compromise existing ones to perform malicious behavior when the program is installed.

InPrivate Desktop was first leaked back in August as an upcoming feature of Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system.

Those are the basics, but be sure to visit Microsoft's blog post about Windows Sandbox if you want to take a deeper dive into the technical details behind the feature and learn how it all works.

Microsoft's Windows 10 October Update has had its fair share of issues, but now it's widely available for all users.

To run Windows Sandbox, your PC will need to be on Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise (build 18305 or later) with a 64-bit dual-core CPU, at least 4GB of RAM, and 1GB of disk space.

ZDNet's Mary J Foley notes that Windows Sandbox is available to users of Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise running Insider Build 18301 or later - a version not available at the time of writing but expected later in the week.

Running a file in the sandbox is easy.

Gary Neville wants Man United to replace Mourinho with Spurs boss Pochettino
United are expected to name an interim manager until the end of the season before appointing a substantial coach for the team. The post was nearly immediately deleted, but not before the screenshot minions recorded it for posterity on Pogba's behalf.

Once this Sandbox is closed, all the software, residual files, and other data are permanently deleted. You can then execute it. "This significantly improves the start time of Windows Sandbox", Microsoft says.

But today an email to those who signed up for the preview said the "Public preview of Windows Virtual Desktop is coming in Q1 Calendar Year 2019" and advised would-be-users to "stay tuned for an update when it's ready!" It makes sense, in an era where "trust, but verify" should be standard operating procedure, that we need a way to safely run applications in isolation from each other quickly and easily. In other words, this is nearly like a normal VM, where the VM uses an entirely different OS image than the one on the host, except the Windows Sandbox uses unmodified files of the operating system to save on resources.

SANDBOXES are useful things.

It's created to allow you to test executable files (.exe) before they are exposed to the main Windows operating system.
