Virgin Galactic's new flight test to soar closer to edge of space

The VSS Unity arrives safely back on the ground after achieving a test flight milestone.

The company has identified 50 miles as the altitude for reaching space, as NASA and the U.S. Air Force award astronaut wings to those who exceed that altitude.

Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides noted that recent research favours the lower altitude.

Mr Branson greeted the two pilots after the test, declaring: "Space is Virgin territory!"

The engine burned for 60 seconds, accelerating Unity to a maximum velocity of Mach 2.9, or 2.9 times the speed of sound, Virgin Galactic representatives said.

Virgin's billionaire founder Sir Richard cried, high-fived and hugged spectators, as hundreds of the firm's employees and family members watched the launch.

The stocking cap appeared to have blood on it. "I then asked Aaron if the fight was about the pregnancy", Mullins wrote . Joseph County deputy prosecutor, said during a press conference that the teen's death is hard to understand.

The company plans to eventually take paying passengers on short trips to space.

"Today, we have shown that Virgin Galactic really can open space to change the world for good", Branson said in a statement.

"Our team's biggest priority is to use meticulous planning and preparation to ensure that stages are dealt with safety, and that every outcome informs and improves future performance", Virgin Galactic continued.

Mission official Enrico Palermo said the spacecraft reached an altitude of 82 kilometres before beginning its gliding descent. It was the first spacecraft with humans aboard to be launched from U.S. soil and reach space since the space shuttle was retired in 2011, and it marked a milestone for the commercial space industry, which also includes companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, and Boeing.

VSS Unity launches horizontally at 50,000 feet (15 km) from the underbelly of its carrier plane, VMS Eve.

Virgin Galactic had remained guarded about the details of its flight test.

India elections: BJP faces biggest setback since Modi came to office
In addition, voters did not seem to find the BJP's return to a more religious nationalism-based agenda compelling. The Congress, meanwhile, has also called out for support from "anti-BJP forces".

That day can not come soon enough for Mercury 13 candidate Wally Funk, who booked her flight on Branson's dream machine back in 2012 and at 79 might finally get a chance to go to space.

Virgin Galactic considers that altitude to be the threshold of space because it's defined that way by the Air Force and other USA agencies, although others have long considered the boundary to be higher.

The new series of tests opens on 13 December, with a goal of further testing the spaceplane's handling and temperature regulation at speeds beyond the sound barrier, and from their performance figure out the ideal moment to stop accelerating and use existing momentum to continue the flight.

"Today we completed our first revenue-generating flight and created two new astronauts - well, one of them was already an astronaut but you know what I mean". In October 2014, its spacecraft crashed during a test flight over the Mojave Desert, killing one of the pilots aboard and severely injuring the other.
