In a medical first, baby born from a deceased donor uterus transplant

Brazilian doctors are reporting the world's first baby born to a woman who received a uterus transplanted from a deceased donor.

The 32-year-old woman, who underwent the transplant in September, 2016, was born without a uterus due to Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, which affects the reproductive system.

The birth shows that pregnancies involving a uterus from a deceased donor are viable, said study leader Dr. Dani Ejzenberg.

The uterus transplant surgery, a first in Latin America, took more than 10 hours to complete. The mother is the first in the world to give birth after such a transplant, a feat doctors were not sure would ever be possible. He also tried the procedure on a second Brazilian woman, but she had to have the uterus removed two days after the operation because of complications.

The whole field of uterus transplantation is in its early days.

She met with Trump at the end of October, fueling speculation that she had emerged as the president's top choice for the role. A Republican congressional aide said the president was expected to announce his decision to tap Heather Nauert for the U.N.

Experts hope uterus transplants will one day be more widely available for women without uteruses or with damaged organs - or potentially even transgender women - seeking to become pregnant.

She added, however, that the outcomes and effects of womb donations from live and deceased donors have yet to be compared, and said the technique could still be refined and optimised.

The report concludes that the results establish proof-of-concept for "treating uterine infertility by transplantation from a deceased donor, opening a path to a healthy pregnancy for all women with uterine factor infertility, without the need of living donors or live donor surgery". But according to the authors, they are the first to have accomplished it with a uterus from a deceased donor (there was a documented attempt in 2011, but the pregnancy ended in miscarriage).

The woman's pregnancy was normal, and doctors performed a Caesarean section on December 15, 2017, after about 36 weeks (a full term is about 40 weeks).

The miracle baby girl was born in Brazil via caesarean section at 35 weeks and three days, weighing around 6lbs.

The position of these molecules forms part of the epigenome - a set of instructions that controls how genes are expressed. So far they've tested the new technology on 200 samples across different types of human cancers, and healthy cells.

As with other organ recipients, the patient in this case was put on immune suppression drugs to reduce the chances of her body rejecting the transplant.

The current norm for receiving a womb transplant is that the organ would come from a live family member willing to donate it. "While uterine surrogacy is legal in the us, this offers an option, albeit an extreme and expensive one, to women who want to carry their own baby".

While babies born from live donor uterus transplants have been done almost a dozen times before, including once in 2017 at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Dallas, this birth marks the first time doctors have been able to remove the uterus from a recently deceased donor and have it result in a live birth.

More: Hospitals know how to protect mothers. Seven months after the surgery, an embryo was implanted and her pregnancy was confirmed. Of this group, one in 500 women has uterine anomalies. The uterus is removed and immunosuppressants are stopped after birth, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The first birth after a womb transplant from a living donor took place in Sweden in September 2013.

Trump's China vehicle tariffs claim sows confusion
As reported by Reuters, fresh concerns are on the rise surrounding the temporary US-China truce that was struck over the weekend. China imposed a retaliatory 25 percent tariff on imports of cars from the US over the summer in response to Trump's own tariffs.

In this study, recently deceased women who had given consent for organ transplant were screened based on previous ability to give birth, blood type, and a lack of any history of sexual disease.
