Rescue mission in Japan after 'mishap' involving two Marine aircraft

Search and rescue operations are underway off the coast of Japan for a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 refueling tanker and an F/A-18 fighter jet involved in a mishap, according to the Marines.

A United States defense official told AFP there had been a crash after the plane took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan. It said in a statement that the accident is under investigation and gave no further details.

A USA official told Fox News that seven Marines were on board the two aircraft.

The Marine Corps said Japanese search-and-rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery efforts. It was not clear how many people were aboard either of the aircraft.

In a statement, the Marine Corps said the planes had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan. Japanese officials said two crew members were on the FA-18, and five others on the KC-130.

Those incidents have stoked tensions between close military allies Washington and Tokyo and led to protests against the deployment of Ospreys by residents living near U.S. bases.
