Elon Musk's public pot smoking days are over, NASA chief says

NASA released a draft request for proposals April 27 that called for USA companies to "introduce new technologies to deliver payloads to the Moon", NASA said when announcing the initial request for proposals. "The innovation of America's aerospace companies, wedded with our big goals in science and human exploration, are going to help us achieve incredible things on the Moon and feed forward to Mars".

The space agency says it will award a total of $2.6 billion to private businesses for the moon effort over the next 10 years.

NASA's objective in sending these payloads to the Moon is to further study its surface and gain valuable insight into potential challenges which could aid future manned missions to Mars.

NASA had previously manifested a launch by SpaceX to demonstrate the crew version of its Dragon spacecraft on an uncrewed jaunt to the ISS for 7 January. NASA might also reinstate instruments from the canceled Resource Prospector lunar mining mission.

"We want to do it far more with commercial and worldwide partners than we can do on our own". "Without it, we're not going to have a safe, reliable, and affordable architecture and implementation for human exploration".

The statement added NASA will periodically "re-examine" the commercial marketplace for "new and emerging lunar delivery capabilities, and may offer additional companies an opportunity to join Commercial Lunar Payload Services through a contract process called on-ramping".

Bridenstein's comments come in the wake of probes he ordered into workplace culture at SpaceX and Boeing, the two companies that have multimillion-dollar contracts with the space agency to fly its astronauts.

Of these nine companies, only Lockheed Martin has experience in terms of producing spacecraft that have flown in space. Draper is another long-time space contractor in the CLPS program.
