Sandigan finds Imelda Marcos guilty of 7 graft counts

MALACAÑANG on Friday said it respected the conviction of former first lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez Marcos after the Sandiganbayan found her guilty for seven counts of graft.

Graft is a bailable case, however, which means Marcos may be given provisional liberty while she is appealing the conviction.

The Sandiganbayan court also ordered the arrest of the 89-year-old widow of ousted Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Marcos was sentenced to imprisonment for a minimum of six years to 11 years and a month maximum.

The Sandiganbayan ordered the issuance of a warrant of arrest against her, but this may not be executed immediately because Marcos can appeal the ruling.

People run from the Route 91 Harvest country music festival after gun fire was heard, October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas . The shooter, who has been described as a 29-year-old white man, was found dead inside of the bar.

The Marcos family has yet to issue a statement on the conviction.

Imelda returned to the Philippines in 1992 and campaigned for the presidency, but lost it.

Marcos said in a statement that the decision was being studied by one of her lawyers who notified the Marcos family that he intends to appeal the decision.

He was accused of amassing more than US$10 billion while in office and died in exile in 1989.

Imee, who swatted away queries by saying she had yet to receive "details" of the verdict, is running for the Philippines senate in 2019.

But Tuesday's victory by Democrats in capturing the House has consequences here. "This is not a Republican or a Democratic issue". In many instances, that office does not require a Justice Department official to recuse, but suggests a course of action.

"I was jumping up and down in joy in disbelief", said former Commission on Human Rights chairwoman Loretta Ann Rosales, who was among many activists locked up after Imelda's husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos, declared martial law in the Philippines in 1972.

However, in 1995, Imelda won election to the House of Representatives, representing the first district in her home province of Leyte.

The Marcos family remains highly influential in the Philippines. Imelda's son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr narrowly lost the vice-presidential election in 2016, a result he is now challenging, and many see him as the natural successor to President Duterte.

He allowed Marcos' embalmed body to be buried at a special heroes' cemetery in 2016, and is often accompanied at official events by Imee.

A spokesman for the Philippine president indicated on Friday that Duterte will not intervene with the court on Imelda Marcos' behalf.
