Hundreds of miles south, authorities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have ordered the evacuation of 75,000 homes, as a wildfire bears down on the beach town of Malibu. Mandatory evacuations were in effect early Friday, and 30,000 homes were under threat from the blaze. Video from the scene shows firefighters battling to extinguish burning buildings, as the sky glowed orange and filled with smoke.

That fire has devastated the town of Paradise, where officials say almost every structure has been razed by out-of-control flames and five people were found dead in burned out vehicles early Friday afternoon.

A series of fast-moving wildfires is racing Friday up and down California, destroying thousands of structures and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate through flame-lined streets.

The Woolsey Fire broke out about 2:25 p.m. Thursday, pushed by strong Santa Ana winds which prevented fire commanders from ordering aerial assaults in the early morning hours. But conditions there could change rapidly as the fire moves toward the coast.

Just 12 minutes after the Hill Fire started Thursday afternoon, the flames spread across the 101 Freeway, leaving several drivers temporarily stranded.

The director of the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services told AP that the fire has claimed lives, but that the number of deaths is still unknown.

California fire captain Scott McLean said earlier that "pretty much the entire community of Paradise is destroyed", adding that the fire had grown to nearly 110 square miles - four times its original size.
