Donald Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Alabama-born Mr Sessions got his christian name from Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America, a pro-slavery union defeated after the Civil War.

Trump announced in a separate tweet that he was naming Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker, a former United States attorney from Iowa, as acting attorney general. The president said Sessions' chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, would replace him for now, with a permanent replacement coming later.

With Sessions out of the picture, Trump has selected someone who has expressed significant skepticism about Mueller's investigation, signaling the president could be pushing for an imminent end to it.

The departure creates uncertainty at the Justice Department, but also for special counsel Robert Mueller's office, which is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the USA election that delivered a Trump White House.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer was asked about Sessions' resignation at a news conference Wednesday.

Odd inherited Sessions's Senate seat after his appointment as U.S. Attorney General.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., acknowledged that Whitaker "has been publicly critical" of Mueller, and alleged that "this may be precisely why the President has chosen to put Whitaker in this role".

Schumer called it "paramount" that Mueller's status be protected by the new attorney general.

"The Justice Department did not announce a departure for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller more than a year and a half ago and has closely overseen his work since then", according to The Associated Press. "Given his record of threats to undermine & weaken the Russian Federation investigation, Matthew Whitaker should recuse himself from any involvement in Mueller's investigation".

"It is nearly impossible not to interpret this any other way than to undercut Mueller", he said.

Trump issued a statement, saying that "we thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!" "I believe myself to have been a reasonable prosecutor, and when the facts and evidence show a criminal violation has been committed, the individuals involved should not dictate whether the case is prosecuted".
