Amazon to split second headquarters into 2 locations

Amazon to split second headquarters into 2 locations

The two cities to be chosen aren't known, nor when they will be named, though the New York Times reported Monday they will be Northern Virginia and New York City.

More than a year after Amazon announced that it was searching for a second headquarters, the company has chose to split the new offices between two cities, according to a person familiar with Amazon's thinking who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Amazon, which is expected to announce its decision as soon as this week, did not comment.

A year after Amazon teased municipalities across the country with the chance to land the company's second headquarters-one that would be on equal footing with its Seattle home base-the e-commerce Goliath has reportedly come up with a new iteration.

Amazon narrowed the options down to 20 finalists earlier this year. And before that, CEO Jeff Bezos - whose fortune is tied to his Amazon stake - became the world's wealthiest man in recent history.

Justine Barwick, a 46-year-old tourist, was attacked September 19 while swimming from a yacht in Cid Harbor and is recovering. O'Connell said that this year's three major attacks remain an anomaly for the area.

About 50,000 jobs would be divided evenly between the two cities, according to the report.

With the Ronald Regan Washington National Airport two miles to the east, the heart of Washington D.C. five miles to the north, and a few stops on Washington's Metro linking all three, Crystal City is in the right geographic spot for the Seattle-based company.

Amazon has said its new campus location, which it has dubbed "HQ2", will bring up to 50,000 jobs and more than $5 billion in investment over the next two decades.

In brief comments to the Miami Herald Monday, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said Amazon has continued to ask for information related to Miami's HQ2 bid, the details of which remain exempt from Florida's Sunshine laws.

"The Amazon jobs are just the tip of the iceberg", said Jeffrey Schulman, a marketing professor at the University of Washington business school who has studied the company's effects on Seattle. And the average salary has been promised to pay more than $100,000 annually over the next 10 to 15 years. In addition, the Washington Post reported that the REIT took several of its office properties off the market, a step possibly undertaken in anticipation of Crystal City's selection by Amazon.

Employer and income information for every member of their household, such as pay stubs or W-2 forms, will also be needed. They highlighted some of the available resources to help Mainers decide which plan is best for them.

Talks with the leading contenders are likely in different phases, while discussions with some of the others on Amazon's shortlist have cooled, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

However, until Amazon officially announces its HQ2 winners, there are reasons for pause. Many people blamed our Socialist City councilmember for scaring Bezos away, others said we should castigate ourselves for being too hard on Bezos (those people forgot we already don't charge an income or a capital gains tax in this state).

But it's beyond dispute that the project is costing taxpayers more than was advertised, and the same will sure be true of whatever deal Amazon gets.

If it's located in an area that's undeveloped, it could avoid displacing current residents (Facebook's development will displace a largely Hispanic community).
