United Nations elects human rights abusers to its Human Rights Council

The victory of India came after the previous UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein asked the body to do an global commission of inquiry into allegations of human rights violation in Kashmir. As there were only 18 contenders, India's membership was certain.

"We thank and commend the UN Human Rights Council, as well as the States that supported our country's bid, for affirming the Philippines' brand of human rights advocacy under the Duterte administration as truly responsive to our people's needs and aspirations for a better and more dignified life", he said.

The body is tasked with promoting and monitoring human rights.

Countries needed a minimum of 97 votes to get elected to the Council. "This lack of standards continues to undermine the organization", she said.

Dewji runs MeTL, a multi-establishment company operating in six African countries which was founded by his father in the 1970s. Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda cautioned the public against speculation.

The US quit the council in June, saying it made a mockery of human rights. It also periodically reviews human rights in every United Nations member country.

The elections had been criticized by a host of other human rights groups as well.

The United States refused to join the body when it was created in 2006, when George W. Bush was in the White House and his ambassador to the UN was John Bolton - now Trump's UN-skeptic national security adviser.

All five of the General Assembly's regional groups had submitted competition-free slates, meaning that all candidates, regardless of their rights records, were virtually assured seats on the council. Over 155,000 other people have been arrested in the two-year-old campaign, which has alarmed Western governments, United Nations groups and rights organizations.

Eritrea hasn't held a presidential election since independence in 1993, and rights groups have long accused the country of having a harsh system of military conscription that has spurred many citizens to flee. The government denies the allegations.

Eritrea recently reached a peace agreement with neighboring Ethiopia after decades of war and unease, but it remains to be seen whether the conscription system will change.

Ahead of the elections, India's Permanent Representatives to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin had tweeted that, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Fiji and India and the Philippines stake claim to 5 seats for Aisa-Pacific region at UNHRC.

Serious rights violations in Bahrain and Cameroon also raise significant concerns, it said.

Hurricane Michael prompts Alabama to declare state of emergency
Hurricane Michael could bring tropical storm force winds, so residents of the area are encouraged to secure any loose objects. Storm surge is not much of a concern because forecasters expect the hurricane to move quickly across the state, Martin said.

While other countries with stronger human rights records were voted in - such as Argentina, Czech Republic and Denmark - the addition of those with poor records was cited as evidence by Haley that the USA was right to withdraw from the body earlier this year.
