Minnesota Children Diagnosed With ‘Polio-like’ Paralyzing Illness

Acute flaccid myelitis affects the nervous system and can lead to the weakening of muscles, health official said.

The MDH noted that there were three cases of AFM in the state in 2014; since then, there has typically been less than one case a year. The Minnesota Department of Health identified the illness as acute flaccid myelitis, and said it was first reported on September 20.

Even with extensive lab testing, AFM is hard to diagnose, because it so similar to other conditions, including poliovirus, West Nile virus and adenoviruses, the CDC reports.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the condition is not new but a recent influx of cases in 2014 (mostly in California and Colorado) had been linked to the spread of an enterovirus known as EVD68.

"That means you need to make sure that you have backup generation power, or you shouldn't be taking care of the patients". Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in 35 counties along Florida's Panhandle and Big Bend regions .

The CDC does not yet know the long-term effects of AFM Some patients have recovered quickly, while others continue to have paralysis, it says.

Its symptoms are likened to those caused by polio, which was eradicated in the US thanks to the polio vaccine.

The agency said it hasn't confirmed the cause for the majority of the cases, which primarily occur in children.

"The patients are now undergoing diagnostic procedures and treatments". Minnesota saw three cases of AFM during that year.

Irving Oil confirms 'major incident' at Saint John refinery
The refinery is near several residential neighbourhoods on Saint John's east side, about five kilometres from the city centre. It is now the largest oil refinery in Canada , capable of producing more than 300,000 barrels of refined products per day.

All six were under the age of 10 and reported weakness and paralysis in the arms and legs.

Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM is considered a very rare condition, with fewer than 1 in 1 million people in the US getting the illness, the CDC said. The initial symptoms of AFM in children include facial drooping, limb weakness and trouble in talking and swallowing.

The illness is called acute flaccid myelitis (also called AFM). There's still a lot doctors don't know about it, and there aren't specific treatments available. A doctor can also do an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to look at a patient's brain and spinal cord, do lab tests on the cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid around the brain and spinal cord) and may check nerve conduction (impulse sent along a nerve fiber) and response.

MDH disease investigators are working aggressively with health care providers to gather information about the cases. The viruses that are accounted to cause AFM may be contagious from one person to another or may be spread by a mosquito or other vector depending on which virus causes the AFM.
