Students watch as Jason Van Dyke found guilty of second-degree murder

Still, even with a guilty verdict, authorities are on alert to see if the verdict will satisfy activists and if the city will remain calm over the trial.

This Oct. 5, 2018 photo provided by the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Chicago, Ill., shows Jason Van Dyke.

They acquitted him on the least serious charge, official misconduct.

The guilty verdict will be greeted as a measure of justice by the black community in Chicago and eases concerns about the risk of public disorder in the city.

Anticipating violence in the wake of Friday's verdict, the Chicago Police Department has canceled overtime and placed an additional 4,000 officers on the streets.

Kevin Graham, president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police, said the conviction will be appealed. Before the conviction Friday, only six non-federal police officers had been convicted of murder in such cases - and four of those were overturned - since 2005, according to data compiled by criminologist and Bowling Green State University professor Phil Stinson.

The Chicago Marathon is due to be staged this Sunday, placing police and the city under greater strain. Chicago is preparing for protests.

As previously reported, Laquan McDonald was fatally shot on October 20, 2014, on Chicago's South Pulaski Road, after officers responded to a report of him carrying a knife.

Van Dyke, who is white, had faced two counts of first-degree murder, 16 counts of aggravated battery, and one count of official misconduct in the shooting of McDonald, who is black. Jurors were told Thursday they had the option of convicting Van Dyke of second-degree murder, which is probationable. Van Dyke said he fired in self-defense after McDonald lunged at him with a knife. Reports noted that police brass had been having regular meetings to plan for unrest, Fox News reported. An autopsy would later show that McDonald, who was carrying a 3in-bladed knife, had the drug PCP in his system.

Prosecutors argued that McDonald's death was not justified and accused Van Dyke of "exaggerating the threat".

In closing arguments, a prosecutor claimed Van Dyke showed no regard for the life of the black teenager while the defense portrayed him as a police veteran ensnared in a tragedy but not a murder.

Jurors began deliberating Thursday afternoon.

Van Dyke listened silently as the verdict was read, taking a swig from a water bottle at one point.

Jurors weren't told anything about the range of punishments for each charge.

Mr. Van Dyke was charged in 2015 when protests against police brutality were sweeping the nation, putting pressure on prosecutors to act.

Three other officers await trial on charges of trying to cover up the killing and obscure the investigation.

The officer had been on the force for 13 years. You can determine what is a murder.

"I'm really happy", Curtis said, "I really felt like if they had returned a not-guilty verdict I would have burst into tears immediately".

However, anti-police fliers posted around the city and posts on social media had led police to be watchful in northwest and southwest neighbourhoods where many police officers live. The anger at how the city had handled the Van Dyke case may be one reason why Mayor Rahm Emanuel abruptly decided not to seek a third term.
