FEMA didn't force wireless carriers to participate, but as NBC News notes, a lot of them did anyway.

They do this using a system known as the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS).

Unlike other alerts - such as natural disaster warnings - there is no way to opt out, except switching a device off or blocking its cellular connection.

It guided the ways in which local, state and federal officials could use these alerts.

Americans can opt out of those, but the new national alert system does not allow for that.

What Can I Expect Today?

The test is made available to EAS participants, officials said.

Earlier on Wednesday, a federal judge in New York City rejected a request to block the test in a lawsuit filed last month by three New York residents.

The emergency text message that President Donald Trump sent to the nation on Wednesday was met with hilarious responses on social media. "No action is required".

If you haven't looked down at your phone recently. You also have to be within range of an active cell tower to receive the alert.

Can I silence my phone or turn off the alert?

You will not be charged for this message, the alerts do not collect any data, and the alerts do not have any tracking capabilities.
