North Carolina Governor Warns Residents to be Alert for Florence Flash Floods

Hurricane Florence has come and gone through North and SC, but its heavy rains and storm surge have caused significant flooding in cities and towns across the region.

Deadly storm Florence drenched North Carolina with yet more downpours on Sunday, cutting off the city of Wilmington, damaging tens of thousands of homes and threatening worse flooding as rivers fill to bursting point.

Emergency workers delivered truckloads of food and water to Wilmington, a city of 120,000 people cut off from the rest of North Carolina by Florence's still-rising floodwaters, as helicopters and boats pulled people from homes swamped by swollen rivers.

Sunday, it seemed, was when the storm system that had stalked the South for days - first as a hurricane, then as a tropical storm and eventually as a tropical depression - showed its full power with staggering scope. Radar showed parts of the sprawling storm over six states, with North and SC in the bulls-eye.

About 17,000 customers were without service in SC, mostly in northeastern SC near the North Carolina state line. Police guarded the door of one store, and only 10 people were allowed inside at a time.

As of today, 356 primary roads are closed in North Carolina, up from 108 on Sunday, said Secretary of Transportation Jim Trogdon.

It comes after a mother and her eight-month-old child were killed when a massive tree crushed their brick house in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Here's a look at five of the areas facing significant problems with flooding, storm damage and rising rivers in Florence's wake.

Five were killed when their vehicles lost control on flooded roads, a mother and her baby died when a tree fell on their Wilmington home and a couple perished from carbon-monoxide poisoning after using a generator inside their coastal SC home as the storm lashed the region. Further inland, the same river, running through Fayetteville, a city of 200,000, was expected to reach major flood levels later on Monday, and would not crest until Tuesday.

Woody White, chairman of the board of commissioners of New Hanover County, said officials were planning for food and water to be flown into the coastal city of almost 120,000 people.

At least 17 people have been killed by the storm. "They have not even begun (to crest)".

"I thought I'd come out here and see if I could get more fuel, but no luck", said Steve McLean outside a Harris Teeter gasoline station that had electricity, but no gasoline. But the waters were deep, and Underwood said the woman lost her grip and her son was swept away. The flooding could presist for several weeks in some areas. In past hurricanes, flooding at dozens of farms also left hundreds of thousands of dead hogs, chickens and other decomposing livestock bobbing in floodwaters. They are usually bolted to the ground, but the statues' thick pedestals were uprooted and washed away, the city said.
