A US Border Patrol agent suspected of killing four women was arrested after a fifth woman who had been abducted managed to escape from him and notify authorities.

She told police she struggled with Ortiz inside his truck, where he pointed a gun at her, but that she was able to flee. Ortiz was charged with four murder charges and one unlawful restraint with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Webb County District Attorney Isidro R. "Chilo" Alaniz.

He is being held on a $2,500,000 bond.

On Friday, Ortiz told police he picked up a fifth woman, Erika Pena.

She said Ortiz eventually ripped her shirt off, allowing her to break free and run to a police auto that happened to be nearby, according to the affidavit. She ran until she found a police officer at a nearby gas station.

When troopers found him on a parking lot, Ortiz tried to escape on foot and was eventually found in a back of a truck.

The victims in the Ortiz case were killed or left for dead in rural parts of Webb County, which borders the Rio Grande. She was found not far from where the previous body was discovered and she later died at a hospital from fatal head trauma.

Investigators believe Ortiz picked up and fatally shot two more victims after the surviving victim fled. Authorities didn't disclose the victims' names or nationalities and they declined to discuss the evidence or say how the women were killed.

Ayala has lived in the South Texas city her entire life, and said she didn't expect something like the serial murders to happen there.

That information led officers to Juan David Ortiz, a supervisory Border Patrol agent.

"We consider this man to be a serial killer who was preying on one victim after another", Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said.

According to a criminal complaint filed on Saturday Ortiz, a married father of two, had confessed to killing four people between September... Laredo is about 150 miles southwest of San Antonio. At least two were USA citizens; the nationalities of the others were not known, he said. He said all the women worked as prostitutes and investigators were trying to find a motive for the killings. It was not clear if he had obtained an attorney.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection assistant commissioner for public affairs Andrew Meehan said in a statement that Ortiz is a supervisory agent. Those two individuals were only identified in the affidavit as "Jane Doe" and "John Doe", but both had been shot to death.
