Australia Warns Consumer to Cut Strawberries After Needles Found Inside Some Samples

Spiked strawberries have surfaced in Sydney, with a horrified shopper finding needles stuck inside three pieces of the fruit.

The BBC and ABC Australia report that sewing needles have been found embedded in strawberries, from six different brands, that came out of supermarkets in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria, per NSW police.

One man has been taken to hospital after swallowing fragments and a nine-year-old boy reportedly found a needle while eating a strawberry, but did not swallow it.

"Coles will be working with growers and suppliers to offer support and will ensure that when supply recommences all strawberry punnets are fully inspected before they are sent to supermarkets".

The Queensland government is now offering a $100,000 reward for any information that will help police catch those behind the strawberry needle sabotage scandal.

"Someone is trying to sabotage the industry but also in doing that, they are putting babies' and children's and families' lives at risk", Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said at a press conference, where she confirmed the reward. "It is simply unacceptable".

Several brands of strawberries have been withdrawn.

Health officials have urged people purchasing the fruit to be cautious.
