Elon Musk's SpaceX to announce first tourist to Moon

If the project is successful, it would mark the first time someone has been to the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972.

After someone responded to the tweet by jokingly suggesting that Musk himself will be the passenger, the SpaceX CEO offered a hint about the person who is traveling, responding with a Japanese flag emoji.

SpaceX announced a year ago that it planned to send two unidenified private citizens on an around-the-moon mission in late 2018.

However the passengers were never named and the flight has yet to materialise.

He has also said that eventually the fleet of SpaceX rockets will be phased out and the BFR will be responsible for all of SpaceX's ambitions.

In an interview in March, Musk said the ship was now being built, adding "I think we'll probably be able to do short flights, short sort of up-and-down flights, probably sometime in the first half of next year".

SpaceX has established its bona fides in the aerospace business by transporting supplies to the International Space Station and by completing the tricky maneuver of recovering rockets after launch so that they can be reused.

Boeing is also hard at work on its crew vehicle, with pioneering flights planned for 2019 as well.

In June, it was revealed by the Wall Street Journal that SpaceX wouldn't be sending a couple around the moon on its Dragon spacecraft later this year, a promise that was touted in early-2017.

The company said in a tweet that the person would be launched aboard its new "BFR" launch vehicle, which is still in development.

During a speech in Australia previous year, Musk said he was hopeful that the BFR would be able to launch and land at last two cargo ships on Mars by 2022.
