US Open: Djokovic equals Sampras slam haul with title

US Open: Djokovic equals Sampras slam haul with title

Novak Djokovic believes Juan Martin del Potro will be back on the big stage and winning grand slams after falling short in the final of the US Open on Sunday.

Del Potro was the sentimental favourite as he attempted to win a second slam title nine years after his first, having suffered two serious wrist injuries, the second of which he feared would end his career.

Novak Djokovic admits his rivalries with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have made him the player he is today.

In their first meeting in a Grand Slam final it was Del Potro, back at this stage for the first time since 2009, who won the coin toss and elected to receive under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof with heavy rain falling in NY.

Putin: Russia knows real identities of suspects in United Kingdom poisoning case
In July, Mr Rowley came across the poison, which had been concealed inside a perfume bottle and left in a charity bin. The UK accused two men of attempting to assassinate a former Russian agent in England with military-grade nerve agent.

After months of struggle and doubt, Novak Djokovic's remarkable comeback has reached its peak. Now Djokovic nets a forehand from the baseline early in the rally and it's a third break point of the game for Del Potro.

It is his 14th Grand Slam title, which ties him with Pete Sampras for third on the all-time major singles titles list behind Federer's 20 and Nadal's 17. He was barking at himself, at his entourage, at a crowd vocally supporting his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro.

When Novak Djokovic won the US Open for a third time on Sunday, he regained his place as his sport's biggest ever on-court earner, BBC Sport reports.

"We are proud to be close to these legends", Del Potro said.

Del Potro, 29, won the only Grand Slam title of his career by upsetting Federer in NY in 2009, but couldn't swing the upset Sunday.

The Oxford United forward tapped home in the 67th minute, 106... "We saw it as a challenge and these are two important victories". Belgium earned a comfortable win over Iceland thanks to a pair of goals by Romelu Lukaku and one from Eden Hazard.

Djokovic says he owes his own success to the rivalries which he has developed with 37-year-old Federer and 32-year-old Nadal over the past decade.

Nadal stayed at No. 1 despite retiring from his semifinal last week, and Federer remained No. 2 after a fourth-round loss in NY. "I'm glad I managed to do that".

"Difficult times but you learn from adversity. when you have doubtful moments when things are not working out as you want (them) to and I try to take the best out of myself in those moments and thrive on the love and support I receive from my closed ones and get myself in this position", Djokovic expressed.

It took him some time to find the right form, as evidenced by his quarterfinal loss at the French Open to a guy who was ranked 72nd and had never won a Grand Slam match until that tournament. "But the guy's won a lot of grand slams and he knows how to win them", Millman said after losing to Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

"I was playing nearly at the limit, all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it, " Del Potro said, "because Novak [was] there every time".

Yet the atmosphere was more positive on Sunday as spectators enjoyed an absorbing contest - again played under the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium due to rain - between two great friends.
