Trump signs order authorizing sanctions for election meddling

The executive action came less than two months before the November 6 midterm elections, and two years after US authorities say Russian Federation meddled in the presidential race won by Trump.

It covers overt efforts to meddle in election infrastructure, such as vote counts, as well as "propaganda" and other attempts to influence voting from overseas, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats told reporters.

Bolton says the executive order will work to stem disinformation campaigns or any attempt to manipulate the outcome of ballots.

It is understood that Russian Federation is not mentioned by name in the text, but U.S. officials named that country along with China, North Korea and Iran as most likely to try to sway United States elections.

"This is meant to be a very broad effort to prevent foreign manipulation of the political process", national security adviser John Bolton said during a briefing Wednesday.

Bigger, thinner Apple Watch Series 4 unveiled at Gather Round event
As far as India is concerned, pricing and availability details haven't yet been revealed but an announcement is expected soon. Applications have been redesigned to account for the larger display and Apple has also included new customisable watch faces.

During the briefing, Bolton was asked why Trump opted for an executive order instead of working with Congress.

White House Special Counsel Robert Mueller has indicted 13 Russian individuals and three companies for allegedly meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The order gives the administration broad authority to the government to sanction any foreign entity suspected of interfering in USA elections.

"We felt it was important to demonstrate the president has taken command of this issue, that it's something he cares deeply about - that the integrity of our elections and our constitutional process are a high priority to him", Bolton said. In making that assessment, the DNI will consult with all of the US' multifarious intelligence agencies.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said, "We have seen signsnot just Russian Federation, but from China, from - capabilities potentially from Iran and even North Korea". Trump stunned the world by accepting Putin's denials over the word of his own intelligence agencies. Those departments would then determine whether to move ahead with sanctions. The intelligence community assesses the information and then turn it over to the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, who will then have 45 days to decide whether to pass it on to the Treasury Department to determine and implement sanctions.

Bolton said the order was necessary to ensure a formal process and authorisation for sanctions, but he said he was in talks with lawmakers about legislation as well.

Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris fined £50,000 over drink-driving charge
His club, for whom Lloris has made more than 200 league appearances since signing in 2012, also declined to comment. A team spokesman said before the sentencing that Tottenham were treating the entire matter "extremely seriously".

Lawmakers and independent analysts say that federal and state action has already made USA voting systems more secure against foreign hackers.

Congress has been purposefully left out of the executive order drafting process, the official said, because the administration wants to preempt legislation being considered in the House and Senate that addresses similar issues.

"It's more than Russian Federation that we're monitoring here", Coats said.

The White House looks set to toughen up against foreign meddling in US elections.

New restrictions in the event of a future influence campaign might not mean much to Russian Federation; several of its intelligence bosses, intelligence officers and others already are subject to US sanctions.

Putin: Russia knows real identities of suspects in United Kingdom poisoning case
In July, Mr Rowley came across the poison, which had been concealed inside a perfume bottle and left in a charity bin. The UK accused two men of attempting to assassinate a former Russian agent in England with military-grade nerve agent.

Trump signed the order just two months before the midterms.
