One million told to evacuate ahead of 'extremely dangerous' Hurricane Florence

Florence is expected to remain an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a new advisory at 3 p.m. for Tropical Storm Isaac designating St. Kitts and Nevis as "tropical storm watch areas".

Florence grew into a major hurricane on Monday morning and was upgraded again to a Category 4 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane strength at midday as its top sustained wind speeds reached 130 miles per hour. Gov. Roy Cooper declared North Carolina under a state of emergency last Friday.

The latest projection for the path of the storm, released Sunday, shows the storm track centered on Wilmington, N.C., with forecasters predicting it will be a "dangerous major hurricane" by the time it reaches the coast later in the week.

“Swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and are beginning to reach portions of the US East Coast.

The hurricane's impacts could range from a strong storm surge to flooding from torrential rainfall and hurricane-force winds. As of the 5:00am advisory, Hurricane Florence has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, making it a Category 2 hurricane.

As meteorologist Stu Ostro of The Weather Channel reports via Twitter, since 1851, only four Category 4 hurricanes have made landfall north of Florida on the East Coast.

Sustained winds have reached nearly 105 miles per hour.

Florence could slam the Carolinas harder than any hurricane since Hazel, which hit in 1954 with 130 miles per hour (209 kph) winds.

Maps of the storm's trajectory showed it likely to come ashore somewhere near the border of North Carolina and SC.

Isaac has become the fifth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season.

And Hurricane Florence will take aim at the Southeast coast of the United States late this week, likely as a major hurricane.

As of Monday night, there are three hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean.

The storm's potential path also includes half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and other industrial waste, and numerous eastern hog farms that store animal waste in massive open-air lagoons.

“As a public safety note, the south shore will experience unsettled surf conditions associated with Hurricane Florence, and the public is encouraged to use caution on those beaches.”. Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune urged people to secure their homes but said it was too early to know if evacuations will be ordered.

"All of the evidence points to an extreme disaster in the making in the mid-East Coast/Carolina region", said Bryan Norcross, a senior hurricane specialist with the Weather Channel.

Feltgen said it's important that people don't get "hung up on the cone", and prepare for the possibility of impacts in areas outside of it.
