"Any of these policy actions would contribute to reductions in population-level consumption, a vital step toward decreasing the health loss associated with alcohol use".

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the peer-reviewed, observational study collated research from hundreds researchers whose work focuses on alcohol to estimate how common drinking is worldwide. We found that the risk of all-cause mortality, and of cancers specifically, rises with increasing levels of consumption, and the level of consumption that minimises health loss is zero. That's in part because some older studies didn't account for the fact that many people who don't drink abstain either because they had addiction issues in the past, or have other health problems that force them to stay away from alcohol.

They say the reason is so that you can avoid risking your health with alcohol, what with a major global study that has concluded that there is no safe limit to alcohol consumption. "But the evidence is the evidence".

In addition to the prevalence of alcohol-related disease, the study also looked at injuries and death resulting from alcohol consumption, such as road accidents and self-harm.

The researchers noted some benefits of alcohol but still maintained that the side effects are far worse.

Any protection alcohol may provide against heart disease is outweighed by the health problems it causes, particularly cancer, according to the authors of the study, published August 23 in The Lancet.

Turnbull's parting salvo at the Dutton and Abbott 'determined insurgency'
Morrison defeated Dutton 45 votes to 40. "There was a determined insurgency from a number of people, " Mr Turnbull said. He returned to Australia to work... "We have lost the prime minister, there is a Government to save", he said.

She added that those who are able to drink moderately are making their own choices based on their experiences.

While that conclusion may seem stark to people who have come to feel virtuous about their nightly glass of wine, Mozaffarian says it's actually not so different from current medical advice. Just 0.8 per cent of Pakistani men and 0.3 per cent of Bangladeshi women drank alcohol.

Every year 2.2.% of women and 6.8% of men die of alcohol-related health problems including cancer, tuberculosis, and liver disease.

Among men, drinking alcohol in 2016 was most widespread in Denmark (97 percent), along with Norway, Argentina, Germany, and Poland (94 percent).

Any protection against heart disease, stroke and diabetes offered by alcohol turned out to be "not statistically significant", said the researchers.

However, when looking specifically at people aged 15-49 years old, alcohol was the leading risk factor in 2016, with 3.8% of deaths in women and 12.2% of deaths in men attributable to alcohol, with causes including vehicle accidents and other injury.

Lucy Rocca, founder of Soberistas, an online forum to help people stay sober, told Sky News: "I don't think it's realistic [for everyone to be sober]".

"We found that the combined health risks associated with alcohol increase with any amount of alcohol".

Drinking patterns vary globally.

Men in Romania who partake knocked back a top-scoring eight drinks a day on average, with Portugal, Luxembourg, Lithuania and Ukraine just behind at seven "units" per day.

"The take-home message being that people shouldn't drink under the belief that it will lower their risk of disease", he said, "and those of us who opt to drink should minimize our intake if we wish to prolong our life and well-being".
