Man is arrested after 70 people overdose on K2 in New Haven

In about 12 hours Wednesday, more than 30 people - most of whom had been on the New Haven green - were treated for overdoses of a drug known as "K2" laced a with a synthetic opioid, police said.

No deaths have been reported, but two individuals had severe symptoms. "At that point, we'd go help that patient, and while helping that patient, another person went down".

Dozens of those overdoses took place on the New Haven Green, a historic downtown park bordering the Yale University campus.

"The Police Department is aware of a high number of patients that were treated since last night, including as many as six now".

A suspect is in custody after over 40 individuals overdosed in a CT park on a drug suspected of being laced with an opioid, police say.

In some cases, patients improved after receiving high doses of the drug naloxone that reverses opioid overdoses, the Houston Chronicle reports.

"Any physical evidence and gathered intelligence, including patient testimony is considered when trying to track down and arrest those who deal illegal drugs in our city". Another five people refused medical treatment.

A number of people were also found in semi-conscious and unconscious states. "He's out cold", an unidentified bystander shouted, according to the New Haven Register.

Officials described a hectic scene as emergency crews worked to respond to all of the overdose reports. They say no deaths have been reported so far, but at least six victims were near death.

New Haven's fire chief, meanwhile, reportedly said that the K2 may have been laced with other substances and that those being treated will have their blood tested to determine precisely what led to the overdoses.

Sandy Bogucki, EMS medical director in New Haven, said they heard from people on the green Wednesday morning that whatever was consumed "potentially" contained PCP and that some of the reactions of the patients in the emergency department suggest an opioid was involved.

Today New Haven was on the front lines of a coast-to-coast struggle to combat the public health menace of illicit distribution and use of what appear to be tainted street drugs. The city also saw multiple synthetic cannabis overdoses in late January. The New Haven green is a meetingplace for the homeless population in the city.

The CDC said a record 72,000 Americans died past year because of drug overdose - about 10 percent higher than previous figures.
