Vienna Takes Home Title Of World's Most Liveable City

The ranking, which was done by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) considered factors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, among others.

The two metropolises have been neck and neck in the annual survey of 140 urban centers for years, with Melbourne clinching the title for the past seven editions. Almost half the cities in the survey saw their ratings improve over the past year. Perth ranked in 14th with a 95.9 per cent rating, while Brisbane failed to crack the top 20, placing 22nd at 94.3 per cent.

Austrian capital, Vienna, has beaten Australia's Melbourne to be named the world's most liveable city.

Other Canadian cities included in the top 10 are Vancouver, ranked in sixth place, and Toronto in seventh.

The global average score improved for the second year in a row, creeping up from 74.8 per cent to 75.7 per cent in 2018.

It was also good news for Hong Kong, which saw a dramatic fall in its ranking back in 2015.

The EIU said Manchester's leap up the list was due to its security score improving.

War-ravaged Syria's capital Damascus is on the bottom of the list which comprises 140 cities globally.

Bangladesh's Dhaka and Nigeria's Lagos were just above at 139th and 138th place, scoring 38.0% and 38.5% respectively.
