Simona Halep beats Sloane Stephens, wins second Rogers Cup title

A tired Simona Halep, upset over how her matches are scheduled, beat Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday to reach the final Rogers Cup final.

It was a repeat of this year's French Open final in which Halep beat Stephens in three sets, but she said this one was even better.

Stephens appeared to be closing in on the first set in the next game, when a wild forehand from Halep - her 20th unforced error - handed her opponent two set points.

Halep made the stronger start, dictating rallies from the baseline to race into a 4-1 lead after twice breaking Stephens in the opening five games. I feel like she improved in her mental (side) also.

The 26-year-old Romanian star also won the hard-court event that rotates between Toronto and Montreal in 2016 in Montreal.

16 security personnel killed in Baghlan attack
Power has been cut to Ghazni since the fighting erupted, with communications in the area appearing to be down. Though the attack failed, they killed at least 14 Afghan police officers in the process, wounding another 20.

"I couldn't believe that it's over", said Halep after claiming her third title this year and the 18th of her career.

"You make me play better and better every time we play", Halep said of Stephens.

After each broke the next two serves, Stephens won her serve to put her up, 6-5. I played some slices.

Barty will play the Romanian for the first time after dispatching Kiki Bertens 6-3 6-1 in less than an hour to extend her ideal record over the Dutchwoman to two matches.

Another poor service game from Halep though gave the initiative back to Stephens, who broke for 5-5 and then held for a 6-5 lead.

Halep had taken the first set on a tie-break, after saving four set points against American third seed Stephens.

Stephens again looked to be on the brink of the first set after surging into a 5-1 lead which soon became 6-4 in the tiebreak.

After a shaky start, the French Open champion won three straight games to take the first set and dominated the second set behind pinpoint serving and stout defence. However, there were just as many pulling for Stephens in a match of two players who don't overpower with their serves but hammer groundstrokes down the lines.

Both players traded early breaks in the decider before Halep secured the 13th break of the match in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead.

However, Halep called on all her reserves of energy to break the resilience of the third seed, shrugging off a double fault at championship point along the way, as she completed a memorable victory. "Just going to kind of take it all in, realize I did a good job this week, and I can be proud of myself for that".
