Monsanto to appeal $289 million verdict that Roundup caused man's cancer

Following an eight-week trial, the jury ordered the company to pay $250m in punitive damages together with other costs that brought the total figure to nearly $290m. "I don't know how they got it wrong but they got it wrong".

According to the MailOnline, the jury sided with the terminally-ill man father who has just weeks left to live.

Mr Johnson read the label but said he was never warned the product could cause cancer, Mr Wisner said. "Hopefully this thing will get the attention it needs", said the 46-year-old, who wept openly after the verdict.

Monsanto, a subsidiary of German firm Bayer AG, has denied glyphosate is linked to cancer, saying hundreds of studies have found the product to be safe.

Brent Wisner, a lawyer for Johnson, in a statement said jurors for the first time had seen internal company documents "proving that Monsanto has known for decades that glyphosate and specifically Roundup could cause cancer".

Idris Elba responds to James Bond casting rumors with cryptic tweets
Reaching very, very far for a connection, one fan commented: "I see two clocks in the picture". Idris Elba has posted a cryptic tweet suggesting he could be the next James Bond .

Wisner called the ruling the "tip of the spear" of litigation likely to come.

Monsanto said it would appeal the verdict.

In this July 9 photo, plaintiff DeWayne Johnson looks up during a brief break as the Monsanto trial continues in San Francisco. "This should send a strong message to the boardroom of Monsanto". Partridge said scientific studies and two government agencies have concluded that Roundup does not cause cancer.

Bayer - which recently acquired the U.S. giant - said the California ruling went against scientific evidence, even as observers predicted thousands more future claims in the wake of Monsanto's defeat. "The verdict today does not change the science".

The case is Dewayne Johnson v. Monsanto Co., CGC-16-550128, California Superior Court, County of San Francisco (San Francisco).

"Monsanto made Roundup the oxycontin of pesticides and now the addiction and damage they caused have come home to roost", said Ken Cook, President of the Environmental Working Group, a US environmental organization that researches toxic chemicals and advocates for corporate accountability.

Last year, a citizen court consisting of a panel of professional judges in The Hague (Netherlands) found Monsanto guilty at a mock trial of human rights violations for harm caused by chemicals.

"The majority of our illnesses and losses to soil quality, water, wildlife and marine life are due to toxic chemicals, particularly Monsanto's most widely used glyphosate herbicides like Roundup and Ranger Pro".

Everybody is tired of Monsanto, even the World Health Organization. It was expedited because court filings indicated that Johnson was dying.

Founded in 1901 in St Louis, Missouri, Monsanto began producing agrochemicals in the 1940s. It was acquired by Bayer for more than $62 billion in June.

In the meantime, Cummins said his group looks forward to the next steps in its own lawsuit against Monsanto, which charges the company has long misled consumers about the safety of Roundup for humans and pets.
