Grieving killer whale carries dead calf for over two weeks

About two weeks ago, a heartbreaking picture of an orca mother carrying her dead calf tugged on the heartstrings of the Internet.

Whale experts have been increasingly anxious about J50 after a researcher last month noticed an odor on the orca's breath, a smell detected on other orcas that later died.

As National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries (NOAA) spokesman Michael Milstein reportedly stated, "Everything is on the table".

In this Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, Southern Resident killer whale J50 and her mother, J16, swim off the west coast of Vancouver Island near Port Renfrew, B.C. J50 is the sick whale that a team of experts are hoping to save by giving her antibiotics or feeding her live salmon at sea.

Scientists want to do everything possible to keep J50 alive because of her reproductive potential and have developed a plan to feed her live salmon containing antibiotics.

J35 was first spotted July 24 carrying the calf on her nose and in her mouth.

Global Stocks Drop Amid Concerns About Turkey
The report comes as the latest reading of the consumer price index - a key metric for inflation - is set for release on Friday. Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.04-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.10-to-1 ratio favoured advancers.

"All we have to go by is her physical condition and her decline in physical condition", Rowles said.

Sheila Thornton, a research scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, said experts are becoming concerned that the whale's behaviour will interfere with her ability to forage.

"I do stress this is a very thin whale", Haulena said, noting that others in the same condition have not survived.

"For close approaches, what we're needing to try to do is to match course and speed of the animals and then very slowly and cautiously move in so we don't disturb them", he said.

USA and Canadian scientists said they were concerned about the mother's condition and would keep monitoring it but have no immediate plans to help it or remove the calf.

"We've been saying it for 20 years, the humans who have been studying these animals", Giles said, before noting that now "the animals themselves in the last three weeks, it's nearly like they've taken the torch".

The fish-eating orcas that frequent the inland waters of Washington state are down to 75 animals, and there hasn't been a successful birth since 2015. She returned to her family of whales in Canada later that year and in 2013 was seen with her new calf.

Her apparent act of grief has tugged at the world's heartstrings for weeks and shown the struggles faced by her endangered pod of southern resident killer whales.

The last time scientists rescued a killer whale in the region was in 2002 when a northern resident killer whale known as Springer was found swimming alone in Puget Sound.

They have called for the removal of four dams on the Lower Snake River to restore salmon runs.

They also face overlapping threats from toxic pollution and noise and disturbances from boats. The meteorological conditions, the location and the still unknown cause of whale health problems are among the factors taken into account.

Last week, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee released a video statement on Facebook detailing what his office is doing to protect the orca population in the waters around the state.
