Russian prime minister strongly warns USA against ramping up sanctions

The warning by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev came after Washington unveiled a raft of new sanctions against Russian Federation over its alleged use of the Novichok nerve agent against a former double agent which Britain has blamed on Moscow.

Russia's prime minister on Friday warned the United States against imposing new sanctions on Russian Federation and said the Kremlin would view any ban on banking or the use of the dollar by Moscow as a "declaration of economic war" that would provoke a strong retaliation.

The US state department on Wednesday unleashed a new round of sanctions against Russia that pushed its currency to a two-year low, and sparked a wider sell-off over fears of a trend emerging in US-Russia relations.

In the run-up to a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki last month, US officials repeatedly called out Russia over its "malign" activities, but Trump did not use such language during a news conference with Putin.

The tough message from Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev marked what the Kremlin sees as a red line, reflecting a growing dismay with the new US sanctions that already have sent the Russian ruble plummeting to its lowest level in two years.

Skripal, a former colonel in Russia's GRU military intelligence service, and his 33-year-old daughter were found slumped unconscious on a bench in the southern English city of Salisbury in March, after a liquid form of the Novichok type of nerve agent was applied to his home's front door.

New sanctions proposals in the U.S. Congress include legislation targeting Russia's state-controlled banks and freezing their operations in dollars - a move that would deal a heavy blow to the Russian economy. "And it will warrant a response with economic means, political means and, if necessary, other means. And our American friends need to understand this", he said, speaking on a trip to the Russian Far East.

The fate of the USA bill Medvedev was referring to is not certain.

The announcement of new USA sanctions has rattled the Russian currency and stock markets.

The ruble fell further Friday morning, reaching its lowest level since August 2016, before rebounding slightly.

However the sanctions announcement could bolster US President Donald Trump's claim that his administration is taking a tough stance on Moscow, even as he continues to denounce as a "witch hunt" an independent probe whether his election campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

The Russian central bank said the rouble's fall to multi-month lows on news of new US sanctions was a "natural reaction" and that it had the necessary tools to prevent any threat to financial stability.
