Pence says United States has never needed a 'Space Force' more

Retired astronaut Scott Kelly on Thursday ripped President Donald Trump's plan for a space force, saying the administration should be fighting Russian cyberattacks on elections systems rather than "science-fiction warfare of the future".

Trump is obviously a fan of the new branch, tweeting "Space Force all the way!" as Pence spoke.

Mike Pence, the U.S. vice president, has announced plans to create a standalone "Space Force" by 2020, becoming the sixth branch of America's military.

United States Vice President Mike Pence has announced the country will create its own "Space Force".

Critics note that the creation of a new military branch would require congressional legislation, and that it would probably balloon the Department of Defense's already massive budget.

The Department of Defense provided a report to Congress calling for the creation of US Space Command, and officials told CNN that the command would likely include existing military resources and personnel, like the US Air Force's Space Command. U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis threw his support behind that idea on Tuesday.

The defender featured against Rangers in the Europa League last week, and having made such an impression, the Gers boss wasted no time in securing his services on a four-year contract.

Even if everything goes smoothly on the political and military fronts, there are still legal and technical obstacles to the Trump-Pence vision of a US Space Force.

He welcomed what he said was a first step in a multi-year process. Pence described space as a domain that was once peaceful and uncontested but has now become crowded and adversarial.

Several lawmakers have already hit back at the move as being costly and unnecessary.

"There will be no Millennium Falcon, no Jedis or Wookiees we are sad to report", Smith said.

"Now the time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces, to prepare for the next battlefield where America's best and bravest will be called to deter and defeat a new generation of threats to our people and to our nation", Pence said. The civilian space agency, NASA, discontinued the Space Shuttle program in 2011, leaving the Russian Soyuz as the only class of spaceships capable of delivering human crews to the International Space Station (ISS).

The Pentagon report recommended that for now the unified command be in the hands of the Air Force, which currently oversees some of the most critical space-based capabilities.

"As President Trump has said, in his words, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space - we must have American dominance in space".

Trump has championed the idea, and cries of "Space Force" have become common at his rallies. "We particularly appreciate Deputy Secretary Shanahan's leadership on these issues and look forward to the establishment of a much-needed independent Space Force, as called for by President Trump". "We have a Navy to protect shipping lanes", she said.

In every domain, America will always seek peace, the vice president said. So, before we can "have the Space Force", as Trump put it, the White House will have to convince lawmakers that the USA really needs it.

But, earlier this week, Mr Mattis said he is in "complete alignment" with Mr Trump's concerns about USA space assets.

Mattis had previously opposed the creation of a separate military branch focused on space, writing to Rep. Mike Turner of OH in July of 2017 that he did "not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations".
