United States to sanction Russian Federation for carrying out Salisbury nerve agent attack

The U.S. State Department said on August 8 that the sanctions were imposed following the use of the "novichok" nerve agent in an attempt to assassinate Skripal and his daughter.

The new sanctions follow criticism of President Donald Trump for his refusal to call out Putin directly for transgressions including interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The Trump administration said Wednesday it would impose more sanctions against Russia as punishment for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt in March to assassinate British citizen and ex-Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

The sanctions announced Wednesday are set to take effect on August 22.

China Strikes Back With Second Tranche of Tariffs
The Chinese government has said it would impose duties as high as 25% on American products like meat, coffee, nuts and auto parts. China, however, would run out of US imports to levy, as it bought only $130 billion worth of American goods a year ago .

The law requires the president to terminate arms sales, deny USA credit and prohibit the export of sensitive technology to any country using chemical or biological weapons.

The first tranche of United States sanctions would reportedly ban licenses for the export of sensitive national security goods to Russian Federation.

Former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal, along with daughter Yulia, was found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury. More than 20 countries expelled Russian envoys in solidarity with the United Kingdom, including the US.

However, the department says it will exempt aid to civil society and humanitarian groups and allow exports needed for continued U.S. -Russia cooperation in space.

The second round of sanctions could cut far deeper, including blocking all American bank loans to Russian entities, an outright ban on United States exports to Russia, and suspension of diplomatic relations. "At the same time, we are quite committed to working to maintain relations-we work on cooperative things where it is necessary to do so". "We are tough on Russian Federation, at the same time we are quite committed to working to maintain relations because there are important things at stake here", the official said, as quoted by Sputnik.

The Skripals were targeted in the March attack, but the second pair to be affected came across the poison in a perfume bottle they found in a bin in Amesbury, eight miles away, in July. Three months later a British woman, Dawn Sturgess, died after being poisoned by novichok in a...

British Prime Minister Theresa May also pressed Trump to address the poisonings when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki last month.

Rowley and Sturgess were hospitalised after being exposed to the deadly nerve agent June 30.

A United Nations panel of experts has expressed concern over military collaboration between Iran and North Korea in the past. He doubled down on that sentiment Wednesday saying that before U.S. sanctions "nobody supported Iran".
