Rick Gates Testifies Against Former Mentor Paul Manafort in Special Counsel Trial

Gates testified that Manafort "requested I make wire transfers from the foreign accounts" and that "at Mr. Manafort's request", the two of them "did not disclose the foreign bank accounts" to the US government.

The prosecution is relying heavily on Gates to show that Manafort directed a multiyear financial fraud scheme, even if Gates helped him execute it. Gates, 46, Trump's former deputy campaign chairman, has figured more prominently than Manafort in the documents that prosecutors have presented as evidence.

Gates admitted that at Manafort's behest, they later created a loan agreement for Lyovochkin's payment, though no loan existed. Gates pleaded guilty this year to felony charges and agreed to co-operate in an investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Ellis said he doesn't see how the travel testimony "amounts to a hill of beans" in the prosecution of Manafort, who is charged with bank fraud, tax evasion and failure to report foreign bank accounts.

The witness also testified that he had helped the defendant file false tax returns, and had concealed 15 foreign accounts from the United States government.

In one email, Manafort wrote "WTF" and "not happy" about tax payments he was going to have to make, Gates said.

Steven Segal appointed Putin's humanitarian envoy
President Vladimir Putin and Seagal are close friends, which is more than likely why this new position was given. In response to the notably unpaid engagement, Seagal said he was "deeply humbled and honoured" on Twitter.

But the prosecution's witnesses have also testified that they generally believed that Gates was carrying out Manafort's wishes when he gave false information to Manafort's accountants.

During opening arguments last week, the defense team made it clear they intend to blame Gates, who handled some day-to-day business operations for Manafort, for numerous alleged reporting deficiencies Manafort is charged with.

New charges can be brought against Gates if he fails to meet the conditions of the deal, he said.

While the case has nothing to do with either man's work on the Trump campaign and the charges mostly pre-date that time, the USA president has shown interest in proceedings.

In other testimony, Gates recounted how he converted a PDF of a profit-and-loss statement to a Microsoft Word document so he could doctor it to inflate the business' income.

When Andres tried to elicit testimony about the oligarchs' backgrounds and why they paid Manafort millions of dollars for his political advice, Ellis urged Andres to "go to the heart of the matter".

Trump says his son sought information on Clinton from Russians in 2016
Trump campaign officials sat down in June 2016 with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who promised dirt campaign rival Hillary Clinton . Trump Jr. has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he couldn't remember if he told his father about the meeting.

Earlier Monday, Ellis threatened to kick reporters out of the courtroom if they continue being "disruptive". In exchange for his plea, Gates agreed to testify against Manafort. Gates' admission, on his first day of testimony under a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, is key to rebutting the prime counter-narrative that Manafort is trying to tell the jury: that.

Gates said that he did all of those crimes "at the direction of Mr. Manafort", CNN reported.

He has tweeted support for his former campaign manager, suggesting he has been treated worse than gangster Al Capone.

Though the names of those companies appeared on wire transfers and at times on his bookkeeper's ledger, both Manafort's accountants and his bookkeeper say they never knew that the companies - and corresponding offshore bank accounts - were controlled by Manafort.

"Did you commit crimes with Mr. Manafort?" a prosecutor asked Gates.

During the testimony, Manafort did not stare Gates down as he did Monday. When a banker asked about $1.5 million debt that Manafort's company owed to a Cyrus entity called Peranova Holdings Limited, Gates produced a backdated document showing it was forgiven.
