Wisconsin man gets rare disease from dog, has limbs amputated

As we learned from a GoFundMe page set up for Manteufel, he thought at first he was suffering from the flu.

Being as positive as they can, Dawn stated they'd rather focus on what her husband has left, than what was taken away.

"It hit him with a vengeance. Looked like somebody beat him up with a baseball bat", Dawn Manteufel said.

Within hours, his body started going into septic shock.

The response caused his blood pressure to drop and circulation in his limbs to decrease quickly.

Not even a week later, his legs were amputated. A second surgery was done in an attempt to remove some of the damage to his legs, but that ultimately was not enough.

A Wisconsin man lost both of his legs from something that seems so common - a kiss from a dog.

Coach's ex-wife's abuse texts put Urban Meyer in crosshairs
Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer has denied knowing about the 2015 domestic abuse allegation against former assistant Zach Smith . Courtney Smith told Stadium, a sports network , that she told Meyer's wife in 2015 about the alleged domestic violence.

Additional surgeries were done to remove his hands.

Manteufel has survived so far after being treated with antibiotics, though he has a long recovery ahead.

The Manteufel family created a GOFUNDME account to raise money for medical expenses. Among the operations he will need is plastic surgery to rebuild a healthy nose.

Within a week at the hospital, the 48-year-old who paints houses for a living and loves to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle lost his legs.

But in Manteufel's case, the bacteria got into his bloodstream, triggering blood poisoning (sepsis).

On the page, Manteufel's family commended him for his courage throughout the scary ordeal.

Mr Manteufel's wife, Dawn, said her husband was the picture of health before contracting the bacteria.

Greg Manteufel suffered a rare blood infection after harmful bacteria from a dog's saliva seeped into his bloodstream, causing sepsis, or blood poisoning from bacteria.

One 2014 study from Japan found the bacteria to be present in 69 percent of dogs and 54 percent of cats.

Capnocytophaga can cause opportunistic infections, meaning they have to have the right conditions to cause an infection, such as when a person has a weakened immune system. People over age 40 are more at-risk.

Doctors ran blood tests and discovered he'd become infected with a bacterial pathogen known as capnocytophaga canimorsus. Dr Sylvia Munoz-Price said: "This type of bacteria comes from the saliva of dogs".

"More than 99 percent of people that have dogs will never have this issue". Symptoms typically appear within three to five days, but can take up to two weeks. His case is particularly unlucky because for the infection to be passed on the dog usually has to bite you.
