Mugabe says he will vote for the opposition in Monday's poll

Referring to current president Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took office with the military's support, the 94-year-old told reporters on Sunday: "I can not vote for those who have tormented me".

"I hope the choice of voting tomorrow will throw, thrust away the military government and bring us back to constitutionality", said a frail-looking Mugabe, 94, in a rambling off-the-cuff speech that lasted nearly an hour.

He said the many observers who have visited the country to witness Zimbabwe's electoral processes will learn something from Zimbabwe's democratic processes.

"I was a fool to have him next to me", he said of Mr Mnangagwa, whom he accused of conniving with the military chief to pull off a "coup".

"Let tomorrow be the voice of the people to say never again shall we experience a period where the army is used to thrust one person into power", he added. "I can not vote for ZANU-PF", the ruling party he long controlled.

He said he has not met Chamisa, but hopes to meet him if he wins.

In a suprise news conference the former president said he would not support President Emmerson Mnangagwa, his long-time ally in in the Zanu-PF party, after being forced from office by the "party I founded". "I wish to meet him, if he wins", he said. What began with optimism crumbled into repression of the opposition, alleged vote-rigging, violent land seizures from white farmers and years of worldwide sanctions.

The country hopes that a credible vote on Monday could get those sanctions lifted and bring badly needed investment for a collapsed economy.

"I must say clearly I can not vote for those who have tormented me".

He made the comments after Mugabe said he would vote for the opposition in Monday's election.
