Donald Trump slams former lawyer Michael Cohen over secret taping

Calling it "inconceivable" and "almost unheard of" that federal agents would "break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning)", Trump then hit out at his former lawyer and special consul calling Cohen's actions "totally unheard of & perhaps illegal". In New York state, it is legal to record a conversation if one party consents.

Rudy Giuliani, the public face of Trump's legal team, said the payment was never made and suggested that the recording was "exculpatory" when the New York Times first reported on the matter.

According to those who listened to the recording, this incident does not appear to pose any judicial threat against the president as long as the payment did not take place. He said the tape would show that Trump makes it clear that if there is going to be a payment, it should be done by check, which would be easily traced.

When informed about the tape, the president said "I can't believe Michael would do this with me", according to a source familiar with the tapes.

Friday's reports raised questions about why Mr Trump's campaign denied knowledge of the deal between McDougal and American Media when it became public and fanned speculation about how much damage Mr Cohen can inflict on the president. Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

"Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyer's office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of".

The recording could also further entangle the president in a criminal investigation that for months has targeted Mr Cohen.

While Mr. Trump said in his tweet that the government "broke into" the lawyer's office, federal investigators had actually executed search and seizure warrants to enter Cohen's home and office to obtain records, CBS News' Jeff Pegues has reported.

"When the recording is heard, it will not hurt Mr. Cohen", Davis said in a statement.

In May, President Trump admitted that he had reimbursed Mr Cohen for a payment to another woman to hush up her claims of an affair. Federal prosecutors are investigating Cohen for possible campaign law violations linked to paying 130000 dollars in hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

He also brings up journalist Jim DeRogatis , who's been investigating allegations against R. Kelly's attorney, Linda Mensch, denied the cult allegations.

Mr Davis said "any attempt at spin can not change what is on the tape".

"There were real feelings between the two of us", she said.

Trump had apparently been unaware of the recordings until he was told about them earlier this week. It's not clear, however, whether the USA attorney's office would be willing to grant Cohen such a deal.

While the American Bar Association said in 2001 it was not necessarily unethical for a lawyer to secretly record conversations with a client, Fordham University School of Law Professor Bruce Green said NY disciplinary authorities could take a more restrictive view of such recording unless extraordinary circumstances existed.
