After Trump tweet, White House says Iran, not USA, is 'inciting'

Trump's tweet, which was written in all caps because of course it was, came after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told a meeting of Iranian diplomats in Tehran that the United States should not "play with the lion's tail" and warned that war with Iran would be "the mother of all wars". "BE CAUTIOUS!" Trump wrote at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Peace with Iran would be the mother of all peace and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars", Mr. Rouhani said. "America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars".

Both the tweet and the speech landed less than two weeks before the administration will begin re-imposing sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.

All of this comes after Trump effectively tore up the Iran nuclear agreement signed under predecessor Barack Obama by threatening tough new sanctions on Tehran. Iran is facing increased United States pressure and looming sanctions after Mr Trump's decision to pull out of the 2015 global deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Zarif's tweet came in response to a recent threat by U-S President Donald Trump against his Iranian counterpart. The sanctions will make any foreign institutions that continue to do business with Iran subject to huge fines and possible blockage from the USA financial system.

"The purchase does not violate the terms of the nuclear agreement Tehran signed with world powers in 2015, but it has generated concerns in the USA and regional countries, particularly Israel".

"The reality is he's such an erratic President that you could see him dropping bombs on Iran or you could see him trying to build hotels in Iran", said Karim Sadjadpour, an Iran expert at the Carnegie Endowment.

"We are asking every nation who is sick and exhausted of the Islamic Republic's destructive behavior to join our pressure campaign".

There is limited appetite in Washington for a conflict with Iran, not least because of the difficulties the US military faced in Iraq after its 2003 invasion but also because of the impact on the global economy if conflict raised oil prices.

On Monday, Trump took aim at The Washington Post for highlighting the lack of solid results and reporting, citing unnamed officials, that the United States president was frustrated by it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is bitterly opposed to Iran, praised Mr. Trump's "strong stance".

"According to Leilaz, Trump's attitude so far has been different from his words" and it's "unlikely such a tweet will have any impact inside Iran". However, at least as of last week, the Pentagon said those Iranian threats had not led the US military to reposition or add to forces in the Middle East.

In the speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Pompeo castigated Iran's political, judicial and military leaders, accusing several by name of participating in widespread corruption.
