Amazon's Prime Day runs into early snags

Amazon will rake in $3.6 billion in sales this Prime Day, analyst Daniel Ives estimates. As Telsey Advisory Group's Joseph Feldman notes, the general boost in online traffic "should spill over to some competitors and boost sales on Prime Day", although he admits that "profitability may prove challenging, despite a well-planned counter-promotion". Many shoppers hoping to score deals were instead met with photos of cute dogs, the company's standard error page. This suggests rich deal pickings to come, as we all lick the spoon of savings, from the mixing bowl of retail. Some deals went live over the weekend for Prime members in advance of Prime Day.

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. With millions of shoppers flocking to the site to in search of wonderful deals, many of which are better than Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day is undeniably huge - and other retailers want in on the shopping frenzy. About 30 percent of products are likely to be as expensive or even pricier than on Black Friday, estimates Phil Dengler of BestBlackFriday.com, a website that tracks deals on November's Black Friday.

For the rest of today and tomorrow Amazon is offering discounts on a bunch of things that you may or may not have an interest in.

The hiccups could mute sales and send shoppers elsewhere on one of Amazon's busiest sales days.

Despite the heavy promotions, selling its own products on Prime Day should help the company's profit margins because it can cut out first and third-party sellers. Target also announced a one-day sale to rival Amazon on Tuesday for "everyone-no membership required".
