Trump claims Germany is 'totally controlled' by Russia

The organization is asking all member states spend a minimum 2 percent of their GDP on defensive measures by 2024. According to NATO's most recent report detailing members' defense expenditures, only five countries now satisfy that threshold: the United States, Greece, the United Kingdom, Estonia and Latvia.

US President Donald Trump insisted on Wednesday that he gets on well with Chancellor Angela Merkel, despite earlier savaging Germany's trade and defence policies.

Asked at a news conference about Trump's demands on defence spending, Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg suggested that the focus should be on getting every member country to reach the current goal of 2 per cent.

In fact, Trump's attack began long before this week's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

"You know, we're protecting Germany, we're protecting France", Trump said.

Trump has claimed on numerous occasions over the last week that the United States" more than 4 percent GDP contribution to the security of the group compared to its European allies is "very unfair' to the American taxpayer.

Pompeo went on to say he's hopeful for peace going forward, but knows the four-decade conflict will not be solved overnight. The Pakistanis too need to understand that they need to have a set of elections that do not have violence.

The president appeared to be referring to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would bring gas from Russian Federation to Germany's northeastern Baltic coast, bypassing Eastern European nations like Poland and Ukraine and doubling the amount of gas Russian Federation can send directly to Germany.

"Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election!", he tweeted last month before tearing into the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its former director James Comey. German Chancellor Angela Merkel fired back at Trump's accusation with a pithy comment. Because of that we can say that we can make our independent policies and make independent decisions. US Turkish relations have recently been strained because of issues ranging from Syria to Iran, but some diplomats say the two leaders - both criticised for their polarising politics - have established a bond.

This is not the first time Trump has taken aim at Nord Stream 2.

Trump described the relationship between Germany and Russian Federation as inappropriate.

Stoltenberg responded by emphasizing NATO's unity. "Well they could increase it immediately, tomorrow, and have no problem".

"Germany, as far as I'm concerned, is captive of Russian Federation because it is getting so much of its energy from Russian Federation", he said. Chief of Staff John Kelly jerked his head away as US Ambassador to Nato Kay Bailey Hutchison looked up at the ceiling.

US Opposes Breastfeeding Resolution
The United States tried to stop a pro-breastfeeding resolution at the United Nations, but ultimately failed. A 2016 study by The Lancet found that breastfeeding could save 80,000 child deaths a year across the globe.

". Vladimir Putin will give a real master class to the inexperienced politician Donald Trump", he said.

Yet Mr. Trump's criticism, which he has been repeating on Twitter for days, is uniquely poisonous. Munich's Süddeutsche Zeitung headlined its story: "It is not only bad, it is catastrophic".

The Trump administration is now trying to derail a German-Russian project to double the capacity of the underwater Nord Stream gas pipeline.

"Many countries owe us", added the President.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen dismissed Trump's comments, saying Germany is not captive to Russian Federation and the country can take Trump's criticisms in stride.
