Tropical Storm Chris could become a hurricane

Tropical Storm Chris off the East Coast is expected to become the first hurricane of the season. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

Many North Carolina beaches are closed to swimming due to heavy surf and risky rip currents caused by Tropical Storm Chris. Chris is now sitting in the Atlantic Ocean but will likely head northeast around Tuesday, remaining in the Atlantic. The storm's centre was expected to pass just south of the island.

Residents of Caribbean islands hit hard by storms a year ago stocked up on food and water.

Beachgoers in North Carolina should beware of risky rip currents as Tropical Storm Chris spins along the mid-Atlantic coast, Governor Roy Cooper warned on Monday after a man drowned in rough surf just north of Nags Head.

About 60,000 homes were still covered by tarps after Hurricane Maria destroyed roofs, and several temporary bridges were still in place.

Lugo lost his roof and two walls to Maria and was waiting for volunteers to secure his new roof before Beryl.
