After talks, NKorea accuses United States of 'gangster-like' demands

The North Korean Foreign Ministry on Saturday criticized recent talks with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, calling them "regrettable" and accusing the U.S. of issuing unilateral demands that North Korea dismantle its nuclear arsenal.

North Korea blasted the USA on Saturday for making what it called "gangster-like" demands in meetings between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Pyongyang officials, calling the attitude and stance of American officials "regrettable".

The official also mentioned that leader Kim Jong-un's letter for Trump was given to Pompeo, saying that he voiced confidence that the trust and friendship built through the Singapore meeting will deepen through talks that the two countries will have going forward.

Following the highly anticipated June 12 summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, the US President wrote on Twitter that "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea".

And in a pointed message to North Korea, Graham said the U.S. has more powerful weapons than sanctions to keep the rogue regime in line - if necessary. "But expectation and hope of ours were so naive as to be foolish", read the statement.

Before events in Pyongyang had concluded, Nauert told reporters that Pompeo had been "very firm" in insisting that North Korea fulfills its commitment to "complete denuclearisation".

The governor has declared states of emergency in Siskiyou, San Diego and Santa Barbara counties this week due to fires. A brush fire driven by high winds in Goleta, California , has destroyed homes and prompted thousands of evacuations .

Pompeo had characterised the meeting as a success, but critically he failed to present any new details as to how North Korea would honour its summit commitment to "denuclearise" in exchange for U.S. security guarantees.

While his talks with North Korean officials were conducted in good faith and they reaffirmed their commitment to abandoning nuclear weapons, he said, the U.S. sanctions against the nation will remain in place.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met North Korean leaders in Pyongyang for two days of talks.

Some analysts have expressed alarm that the talks appear to have run into difficulties, although others see a possible North Korean negotiating ploy. "Some places a great deal of progress, other places there's still more work to be done", he said.

However, asked about the apparent atmosphere at the talks, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told NBC: "There's a lot of hard work to be done". And earlier in the day, he had a curiously testy exchange with Kim Yong Chol, who mused that the secretary may not have slept well the night before because of the important issues they had discussed. "If you don't want to have a nuclear-armed North Korea, go have a war with them".

In practical terms, Pompeo mentioned only that officials from both sides would meet on July 12 to discuss the repatriation of the remains of some United States soldiers killed during the 1950-1953 Korean War. He said North Korea understood that denuclearization must be "fully verified" and "final".

Pompeo said talks had yielded an agreement to form a "working level" group to oversee day-to-day interactions between the United States and North Korea.

Just hours after Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, the North blasted the discussions, saying the visit had been 'regrettable'. "[It] will take place at the border and that process will begin to develop over the days that follow", he said as he boarded a plane for Tokyo.

Pompeo, accompanied by senior State Department and Central Intelligence Agency officials, held nearly three hours of talks on Friday evening. "There are things that I have to clarify", Kim, who serves as vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), said.

He added that the United States also has to partner with Turkey to maintain a US troop presence in northeastern Syria to ward off Iran.

So North Korea is stalling on even the simplest promise made last month.
