Flights in and out of Bali cancelled

The global airport on the Indonesian resort island of Bali reopened on Friday afternoon after a almost 12-hour closure due to a volcanic ash threat that disrupted travel plans for thousands.

Ngurah Rai worldwide airport says all flights are suspended until at least 7pm local time (9pm AEST).

The eruption sent thick smoke and ash at least 2 km into the air, ChannelNewsAsia reported.

Meanwhile, a check yesterday evening with Changi Airport's website found that AirAsia Flight QZ508, which was scheduled to land in Singapore at 8.20pm from Denpasar airport, had been cancelled. Volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines, clog fuel and cooling systems, and affect visibility.

Mount Agung, in northeastern Bali, has erupted with various intensities since late a year ago and in December the airport was also closed for a period and thousands were evacuated closer to the volcano.

In November, 150,000 local people were evacuated from the mountain and surrounds as volcanic activity intensified.

Indonesia is home to around 130 volcanoes due to its position in the highly active ring of fire - a belt of tectonic plate boundaries in the Pacific Ocean which is vulnerable to frequent seismic activity.

Despite the eruption the volcano's status has not been raised by Indonesia's volcanology agency and remained at alert level, while the Volcano Observatory Notice For Aviation has issued an orange level warning.
