TIME cover features Trump towering over sobbing girl whose mother is detained

The image has been seen and shared by millions, as Trump's controversial policy of taking asylum-seeking children from their families and holding them in US foster care-while their mothers and fathers are jailed and criminally prosecuted-draws fierce criticism.

The stark cover features President Donald Trump looking down at the already iconic image of a child, a two-year-old girl from Honduras, separated from her family and crying in distress at the USA border. The girl's mother was being frisked and body-searched (after which she was reportedly detained) when Moore took this picture.

Moore told "Time" that capturing the moment of the little girl crying as her mother was searched and detained was "tough".

The young girl on the cover comes from a photo taken by Getty photographer John Moore at the southern USA border. The photograph of the Honduran girl was just another such experience of a family trying to cross over Rio Grande's northern bank.

Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order that halts the practice of separating families, but it doesn't end "zero tolerance".

The new Trump administration policy, which went into effect in May, sought to maximise criminal prosecutions of people caught trying to enter the United States illegally.
