‘Gaming Disorder’ Added To WHO’s List Of Mental Health Conditions

The AP notes that The American Psychiatric Association still does not label Gaming Disorder as a mental health condition.

The NHS (National Health Service) will treat people who have become "addicted" to video games after being declared a Mental Health problem.

A major venture for the World Health Organization is creating and maintaining the International Classification of Diseases, which is a grading system that assists in identifying a wide range of signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, and much more. The increased risk may be from the frequency of gaming, from the amount of time spent on these activities, from the neglect of other activities and priorities, from risky behaviours associated with gaming or its context, from the adverse consequences of gaming, or from the combination of these.

It adds the behaviour is severe enough to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.

The ICD defines gaming disorder as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour, which may be online, or offline.

Many parents will have thought it for a long time, but they now have a new argument to limit their children's "screen time", addiction to video games has been recognised by World Health Organisation (WHO) as a mental health disorder.

Key symptoms include "impaired control" - notably the inability to stop playing - and focusing on the game to the exclusion of everything else. Although that may sound intense, so was her video game addiction.

For instance, some people working on stroke have always been pushing for it to be moved from circulatory diseases, where it has been for 6 decades, into neurological disease, where it now sits in ICD-11.

'Upskirting' law blocked by Tory MP
Prime Minister Theresa May said she was " disappointed " that one of her own MPs had prevented the bill from progressing. Frazer had called upskirting "a ugly invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded and distressed".

It's also worth mentioning that even with this definition, diagnosis standards are quite high. It urges the World Health Organization to reconsider before officially placing it in the final version of the medical classification document.

The WHO said that if gaming takes precedence over daily activities and life interests, then it can be classed as gaming disorder.

One thing is clear: The ICD-11 update is arriving one way or another.
