Sri Lanka cricket captain pleads not guilty to ball tampering

Sri Lanka's players refused to take the field on the third day of the match in St Lucia on Saturday, delaying the resumption of play for nearly two hours, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) said umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould had changed the ball and awarded West Indies five penalty runs.

These actions resulted in a drama-filled morning in Gros Islet; Chandimal's men had refused to take the field and, when the match eventually resumed after a two-hour delay, SLC pointed out that the players were continuing with the game "under protest".

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the umpires laid the charge on Chandimal after reviewing footage of day two, where they found evidence of a foreign substance being applied to the ball.

Animated discussions ensued involving match referee Javagal Srinath and the Sri Lankan pair of coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gurusinha.

The footage showed bystanders trying to pull open the driver's door, and the driver then jumping out of the cab and running away. The incident occurred on Ilyinka Street, a short distance from Red Square, a popular tourist attraction in the Russian capital.

They penalised Sri Lanka before play on Saturday with a change of ball and the award of five runs to the West Indies.

Sri Lanka cricket authorities have thrown their support behind their team in the ball-change controversy that marred the third day of the second Test against West Indies, and have vowed to "take all necessary steps to defend any player", unfairly accused of any wrongdoing.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the team had denied any wrongdoing.

The Sri Lankan board sent out a statement defending its players.

"Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been charged for breaching Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct", the ICC tweeted.

Bancroft was subsequently whacked with a nine-month ban from global and first-class cricket by Cricket Australia.

But an hour has gone and we are still no closer to the start of the third day's play as West Indies trail Sri Lanka by 135 runs with eight wickets in hand. "The Sri Lankans would have taken offence at that and would have made their case".
