U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference in Singapore on June 12, 2018, in this photo captured from the website of The Straits Times. "I hope that the negotiators will have enough patience for it". "And then goes on to say that someday he'd like to get our troops out of Asia, that's an astonishing development, and one that will add no leverage for [Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's] follow-up efforts - quite the contrary".

The meeting was also a "defining moment" for Trump, leader of "the world's police at the moment", said Cabalza.

The previous day US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters he did not believe that troop levels were on the agenda.

They say the Chinese leaders, who are unused to being on the outside looking in, are growing anxious about whether they can keep their Cold War-era ally firmly in its current orbit around China.

But on Tuesday morning Pentagon officials said they're still awaiting more detail from the White House.

How did South Korea react?

South Korea was apparently caught off guard by President Trump's announcement that the U.S.is canceling their long held joint military exercises in exchange for a promise from North Korea to denuclearize. But, Koreans are anxious they could be affected by the summit discussion.

War games even nearly derailed the summit.

"We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Mr Trump said, labelling the exercises "inappropriate" and "very provocative".

What else did they agree at the summit? The two met over a one-on-one meeting after shaking hands and they were accompanied by their interpreters.

According to VFW, an agreement between the United States and North Korea spanning 1990 to 2005 saw the return of 229 sets of remains, with many more identified.

Lastly, even as the door to diplomacy remains open, we shouldn't forget who Kim Jong Un is.

Kim emphasized the need to take "practical measures" to implement all the agreements discussed during his summit with Trump and promised in the joint statement "at an early date".

The report quoted Kim Jong-un as saying that ridding the Korean Peninsula of nuclear weapons is dependent on Washington and Pyongyang ceasing moves that antagonise each other.

Two years ago Barack Obama travelled to Cuba - and was roundly denounced by conservatives for breaking bread with totalitarian leaders and praised by liberals for his statesmanship.

President Trump said that he had asked for the concession at the last minute but Kim Jong Un agreed to start the process immediately, "He agreed to that so quickly and so nice - it was really a very nice thing, and he understands it".

On conservative Fox News and among Mr Trump's core supporters, the president was lauded for a historic diplomatic breakthrough.
