Hurricane Bud strengthens to category 3 off Mexico Pacific coast

"Bud is forecast to weaken below hurricane intensity by Wednesday night".

The first storm of the 2018 season was Subtropical Storm Alberto, a sprawling and somewhat disorganized system that made landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Monday, May 28, Memorial Day.

In the Atlantic basin, the hurricane center said there's a 20% chance that a tropical depression or storm will spin up witin the next five days in the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico.

The swell also will generate strong rip and side currents, creating hazardous conditions for swimmers and surfers. Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches (75 to 150 millimeters), with isolated patches of 10 inches (250 millimeters), was possible into Tuesday afternoon. In addition, rain from Bud "could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in higher terrain". A tropical storm watch has been posted for portions of Mexico's west coast.

Hurricane Bud grew into a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 miles per hour off Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday. Bud is now a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The Miami-based US National Hurricane Center offered similar data, but said it would start to slowly lose steam as it continues on a northwest track on Tuesday.
